November 23, 1933 - November 25, 2012 Service Date: December 29, 2012 .A memorial service is being planned for Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at 1:00pm at Word of Hope Church, 1351 Jolly Lane, Rapid City, SD with Pastor Scott Wiley officiating; his last request was to have the service after college finals as to not interfere with his grandchildren’s education as this was very important to him. The family respectfully requests no flowers to be sent. |

Proctor “Rock” Hall, 79, born Nov. 23, 1933, to Israel B. and Ethelyn (Wheeler) Hall in Ludlow, VT died Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Ft. Meade Veterans Center in Sturgis, SD.Rock grew up on his grandfather’s farm in Vermont and spent his early years milking dairy cows and tapping Maple trees for maple syrup.He played trumpet in the high school band as well as for a variety of dance bands. One year he was privileged to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade with his high school marching band.Rock attended college for 2 years at Middlebury College, VT, and then joined the Air Force at age 20 where he served for 13 years. He served in Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam (before the conflict), Alaska, and Ellsworth in SD. In the Air Force he served in a variety of areas including medic, communications, military band, and ski instructor (AK). Also while in the Air Force, Rock trained for the 1960 Olympics and was alternate for the biathlon (skiing & shooting) team.On April 14, 1962 Rock was married to Sharon Savoy in Rapid City, SD. While stationed at Ellsworth AFB, Rock and Sharon had two children, Penny and Tom. After retiring from the Air Force, they moved to Tacoma, WA and had their third child Jennifer. The Halls lived in WA, SD, CT and then eventually settled back in Rapid City, SD in 1977.Rock loved a variety of activities including skiing, hunting, fly-fishing, watching musicals with his daughters, horseback riding, steer roping, watching John Wayne movies, and listening to comedians like Ray Stevens, Jerry Clower, & Bill Cosby. He was also quite fond of the celebrities Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, and the Peanuts character Snoopy.Rock is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sharon; brother Jay of Vero Beach, FL; sister Patricia Brown of Springfield, VT; daughter Penny (Frank) Darling, son Tom, daughter Jennifer, and grandchildren Trista, Cody, Zachary, Cailean, Cassie, and Jessie, all in Rapid City, SD.Rock is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Christopher, and toy poodle Tinker, beloved pet & family member of 20 years. | |
