Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 19, 2010 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home. Interment with Full Military Honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post #1273 Honor Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the funeral home.

Charles L. ‘Chuck’ Root, 85, Rapid City, died Saturday, November 13, 2010 in his home.He was born October 23, 1925 in Nowlin, SD to Earl and Helen (Waller) Root. Chuck lived and went to school in Midland, SD. He worked on the Midland Railroad prior to serving in WW II from April 1944 until his honorable discharge in June 1946.Chuck married Darlene Fischer December 1946. They had 3 children, Charles, Mary Jo and John. Darlene preceded him in death. He later married Geraldine (Kortan) Price.Following his discharge, Chuck was employed by the City of Rapid City, United States Postal Service, Pete Lien and Sons and Johnson Fuel Liners. From 1960-1963, Chuck was employed as a civil servant in San Diego, CA. He was a licensed pilot who loved to fly single engine planes and helicopters. He was a member of the VFW Post 1273, Moose and Eagle Lodges and the American Legion.Chuck is survived by his wife of 44 years, Geraldine Root; a daughter, Mary Jo (Jerry) Beckman; a son, John (Paula) Root; 10 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; a brother, Earl (Helen) Root, Casper, WY; 2 sisters, Brownnie (Jim) Platt, Gladys (Dave) Sanchez.He was preceded in death by his first wife; a son, Charles Root; 2 sisters, Clara Rosscamp Black, Mary Joann Root and a brother Bob Root.
