Pauline Lois Kammerer Guffey was born September 7th, 1933 in Rapid City, the fourth of five children to
J.F. (Fritz) & Kathryn McNenny Kammerer. She died peacefully in her sleep in her home of 59 years September 10th, 2020, just 3 days after her 87th birthday.
Pauline was raised on the family ranch Northeast of Rapid City doing her share of the chores, sewing, participating in 4-H, and preparing for her future as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Upon graduation from Rapid City High School, she worked as a secretary for American National Bank. In March of 1956, a mutual friend set up a blind date with, what turned out to be, the Love of her life…Dwight.
While working for a Patent Attorney in Denver Colorado, Dwight & Pauline kept in contact and were eventually married in Las Vegas, Nevada in November of 1958. To this union four children were born… Brett, Diane, Todd, and Scott. Pauline spent her years of marriage primarily as a stay at home mom, and was the anchor of the family when Dwight decided to start American State Bank in 1972. In the late 70’s, Pauline, along with sister-in-law Shirley, owned and operated a jewelry store close by the downtown
bank called Turquoise Treasures. Later on, years were spent with friends and family at their cabins at
Angostura, and later Blue Wing at Sheridan Lake. She was always known by her family to be the host for
family birthday gatherings, complete with dinner, and homemade birthday cake and ice cream, unless (in later years), the family birthday fell on a workday at “The Indians” in Keystone as “surely they couldn’t have survived if she took off a day of work”!! Holidays were always spent at Pauline’s home including the annual 4th of July BBQ, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas until health required her to pass the baton to the kids.
Pauline will always be remembered for her hospitality, friendship, and homemade cooking. She will be forever loved and immensely missed by her Son Brett Guffey, Daughter Diane (Marty) Wilcox, and Son , Scott (Jamie) Guffey all of Rapid City; Grandchildren Ashley Byrd (Partner Ryan Brink) of Rapid City, Jessi Byrd of Opelika, Alabama, and Harper & Hayden Guffey of Rapid City; and, Great Grandchildren Elsie & Oscar Johnson of Opelika, Alabama, and Hudson Brink of Rapid City; plus several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Morris “Dwight” Guffey and her son,Todd Guffey, her parents Fritz & Kathryn Ka mmerer, sisters Pat lClarence) Roth, Lianne (Don) Bechand, Lorraine Kammerer, and brother Lefty (Shirley) Kammerer.
