Mary Ellen Trenary, 79, Rapid City, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born August 3, 1935 to Charles and Genevieve (Hard) Pullins at Lemmon, SD. The family lived in a homestead “dugout” in Cedar Canyon, located north of Mud Butte in Perkins County. During 1940 the Pullins family, Charles, Genevieve, Thelma, Glen, Gaylord and Mary moved to the Black Hills. They lived between Keystone and Hill City near the old ‘Tin Mill’. Mary went to grades 1-6 in Hill City and then to Lead High School. Mary and Jim Trenary met on a blind date on the 15th of March 1952 and were married on November 2, 1952 in Lead. They lived in Newcastle where Mary worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Landrigan and Jim worked on the drilling rigs. On November 9, 1953, Uncle Sam separated them and Mary moved back to Lead and worked for another dentist. On November 10, 1955 we became part of the MDU family in Rapid City. Mary was secretary for Dr Stevens and then the superintendant for the old Rapid City High School for about a year. Mary then became a stay-at home mom. Mary joined the Woodman of the Word Sorority and was a delegate for the national convention in Chicago. She was selected as the ‘National Ideal Sorority Sister’! There was a minimum of fifty in contention. Mary brought home the trophy from the convention of 1964! Mary and Jim had three children, Danita, Kelly and Teresa. When they grew older Mary waited tables at the old Rainbow Ball Room on Saturday nights. She later worked at the Esquire, Embers, VFW and Elks Club. She was also involved in Little League as scorekeeper and fund raiser. She was the first woman to serve as president of the Rushmore Little League. After the kids were grown, Mary and Jim joined the Good Sam Camping club and enjoyed that with their grandson Kevin. Mary served as President of the Rushmore Ramblers for 2 years. Mary and Jim had a good life until September 1990 when she had a severe heart attack at the age of 55. Dr. Purdy was her salvation and since the heart attack, Mary has had numerous surgeries in Rapid City, at the Mayo Clinic and Denver. She was one tough woman! Our thanks to Dr. Purdy, Dr. McCafferty and Dr. Neilson; Dr. Purdy has treated Mary for the past 24 years and Mr. McCafferty for 16 years. Even with the care she received we know she is in a better place and free of pain. Mary is survived by her husband Jim, daughters, Danita (Lyle) Konst; Teresa (Larry, deceased) Hill; son Kelly (Judy) and her son Matt Bowman; special grandson Kevin Dykstra; grandsons Benjamin Hill and Jon Konst. Her granddaughter Emily Hathaway (Konst) and her husband Michael gave her her greatest wish- to be a great-grandmother on July 25th. Genevieve Anne was 3 weeks old when she passed. Mary is preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. We will always miss you Mary, Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma. Gone, but NEVER forgotten!
