Jane Lynn Thompson

December 1, 1948 - January 8, 2021

Share your Memorial with Family & Friends

Because a courtroom is an inefficient place to measure parental competence and family dynamics, judges often use specially trained and experienced experts to help them decide child custody and parental sharing arrangements. Jane Thompson was one of South Dakota’s most reliable family evaluators. Her integrity, judgment, fairness, and devotion made her a wise and reliable guide in a difficult process. She never lost sight of the primary concern: children, their needs, security, and development. Her passing is a loss to our community as well as to her family. God rest her soul.

In 1981 I started out as a prosecutor handling juvenile cases in Pennington county. Jane was the supervisor of child protection services. She taught me a lot about how to prosecute a case, and to protect children. Imagine my surprise when I read in her obituary that she was only seven years older than myself. When I met her I thought she had the wisdom of the ages. She was very professional and had a good sense of humor. I was lucky to have her in my professional life.

Jane was a highlight of my high school years and time at MYF. Such a positive and cheerful girl then. I am deeply saddened and in the same light she added to my life. Never forgotten.

Back in the 80’s I was involved in an ugly divorce and child custody dispute. As part of this process Jane was assigned as the the mediator. it was a long involved process and several times Jane ruled against me. I say this so you have an idea how Jane viewed her job. jWhen Jane first met my daughter, she told her, your dad has his lawyer, your mom has her lawyer, I will be your lawyer! It was long and at times ugly and I did not always agree with her but she kept her word to my daughter and always based her decisions on what she felt was best for my daughter! A true professional with a heart for children! Please accept my condolences!
