Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. (MDT), Wednesday Sept. 7, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1630 Rushmore Street, Rapid City with Pastor Josh Jones officiating. A second service will be 10:00 a.m., (CDT) Friday Sept. 9, 2011 at Light of the World Gospel Ministries, Main Street, Decatur, NE with Pastor Paul Malcomson officiating. Interment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Decatur, NE

Doris Delores Bartling was born to Paul and Elsie (Murphy) Johnson April 3, 1926 south of Macy Nebraska. She passed away August 30, 2011 at Fountain Springs Healthcare in Rapid City, SD after a lingering illness due to a broken pelvis. She received her education at Macy, Nebraska and graduated from High School in 1944. Later she received her Bachelors’ Degree in Education from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska and became an elementary school teacher. On October 15, 1946 she was married to Edward Henry Bartling in Martinez, California. He was a career Army SGT for 24 years and so they lived in eight states as well as 2 foreign countries. They retired in Walthill, Nebraska where she taught school. She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and her husband Edward. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law Edward ‘Dow’ and LaDonna Bartling, Rapid City; one daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth Jane and Steven Smidt, West Point, Nebraska; one brother and sister-in-law Emmett and Shirley Johnson, Decatur, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Aryn Smidt, Alicia Jones, Justin Bartling Martinez and one great grandchild Sophia Jones. As a young girl she served our country during World War II by working in a bomber plant in Omaha, Nebraska. She was a ‘Rosie the Riveter’ if you will. Doris served as a school teacher for many years from a one room school house, to educating a room full of junior high students. In 1975 she was chosen as the teacher of the year and was asked by the graduating senior class to be the keynote speaker. Doris is a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rapid City and very much enjoyed the weekly women’s bible study. Doris touched the lives of many relatives and people with her smile and generosity, and maintained her ATTITIDE OF GRATITUDE all the way to the end.
