I knew Dan for almost 40 years, first professionally and later as a friend as well. We started out talking out concrete problems and fly ash characteristics when he cold called me in Cheyenne in 1984 after learning of work I was doing for the Wyoming Highway Department. That started a long collaboration and as life and God works in mysterious ways, after we moved to SD in 2000 much more frequent collaborations. I worked with Dan on multiple research projects over the years and we spent untold hours of windshield time visiting and analyzing projects across North Dakota and South Dakota. Those were always trips I was sad to see end as the discussions ranged all over the map (and world) and sometimes even included spirited debates...the kind that don't seem to be in vogue anymore that end in both parties learning something new, thinking something different and with deeper understanding of not only the issue, but the person. After Dan and Mary retired, we commiserated about Mary's death. I stopped many times in Rapid City in the last 5-years to visit with Dan. He was one of the most intelligent, honest, passionate and well read people I've ever met. I feel fortunate in having met him and thank God I stopped to see him a couple of months ago not realizing his recent health struggles. The conversation at that visit, as it was with most of our visits, continued as if we hadn't missed a beat. I will truly miss Dan "the renaissance" Man (I always called him Dan the Man) and my condolences go out to his siblings, children, and particularly his grandchildren. He was so proud and caring of all of you and spoke frequently of you with a " twinkle" in his eye. God speed to his spirit and comfort to all of you.

Dan and I were classmates at SDSMT. I always appreciated my friend's intelligence and positive attitude. Thanks, Dan.

Dan improved the quality of concrete used on South Dakota's highways and advanced published concrete research. He also called bullshit better than most, and unfortunately found a lot of it in South Dakota state government. The world is poorer without him. Best wishes to his children, grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Julie
