Christian was my first cousin ( Danish: fætter) and I grew up knowing of my American part of the Hassel family through my dad’s sister, Ditter. All three children - Lisa, Nina and Christian - were wonderful in their own very distinctive ways when I’d meet them on summer vacations in Hellebæk. Christian lived in Denmark for quite a while as an adult and that’s where I got to know him better. He loved living by the sea and always had a kind and gentle energy about him. I think the great conundrum of living in this harsh but beautiful world of ours was always a challenge for Christian, but he found his own way and truly loved his wife and daughter as well as the ways of a traveler. We’ve lost a beautiful soul. Rest in peace, dear fætter.
